Reclaiming My Balance: Why I Turned to Functional Nutrition
We often look for complex solutions to our health, but sometimes the most powerful tools are found right in our spice cabinet.
For a long time, I struggled with fibroids, which caused soul-crushing fatigue and constant bloating. I also navigated the aches and pains of endometriosis that heavy, full-body exhaustion that many women know all too well. After the major life change of an open myomectomy, I committed to a journey of trial and error with everything I put into my body.
That’s how I discovered this Hibiscus Elixir (Cee’s Special). It’s not just a drink; it’s a non-negotiable ritual that helped me reconnect with my body during recovery.
The Power of the Blend: Why These 4 Ingredients?
This isn’t just a refreshing tea; it’s a functional tonic. Each ingredient serves a specific purpose for your hormonal health, from stabilising blood sugar to reducing systemic inflammation.

Cee’s Hibiscus Elixir
1. Hibiscus: The Women’s Health Powerhouse
Hibiscus is one of the most beneficial plants we can include in our routine. It’s rich in antioxidants like polyphenols and Vitamin C.
- Fights Inflammation: Crucial for managing conditions like endo.
- Liver Support: Helps the body process and eliminate excess hormones.
- Heart & Blood Health: Lowers blood fat and LDL (bad cholesterol).

Cinnamon Sugar Stabiliser
2. Cinnamon: The Blood Sugar Stabiliser
Cinnamon is a spice rich in polyphenols with antimicrobial and blood sugar-lowering properties.
- Insulin Sensitivity: Helps manage glucose levels, preventing the sugar spikes that trigger hormonal mood swings.
- Metabolic Health: Supports heart health by reducing triglycerides.
- Anti-Inflammatory: Reduces chronic inflammation associated with arthritis and joint pain.

Cloves Antioxidant Flower
3. Cloves: The Antioxidant Flower Bud
Cloves are packed with eugenol, a compound offering powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
- Hormone Regulation: Helps improve insulin function and regulate blood sugar.
- Digestive Aid: Stimulates digestive enzymes to alleviate bloating and gas.
- Bone Health: Rich in manganese, which is essential for maintaining bone strength.

Bay Leaves Anxiety Reliever
4. Bay Leaves: The Anxiety Reliever
Rich in Vitamins A, B6, and C, bay leaves provide the “extra protection” our nervous system needs.
- Reduces Anxiety: Known for its calming effect on the mind.
- Respiratory & Immune Support: Strengthens the immune response against cold and flu.
- Digestive Comfort: Soothes upset stomachs and improves nutrient absorption.
The Connection: Why Your Body Needs This Support
In order for our beautiful bodies to feel connected and work together, we need to understand a secret that isn’t taught enough: The Liver-Hormone Connection.
Our bodies are brilliant, but they need help “cleaning house.” When we deal with fibroids or endometriosis, our systems are often overloaded. The liver is responsible for breaking down excess estrogen. If our digestion is slow or our liver is sluggish, that estrogen stays in our system, leading to more pain and bloating.
By drinking these ingredients, you are supporting your liver’s ability to detoxify and your gut’s ability to heal. It’s about giving your body the “extra protection” it deserves so everything can work in harmony.
The “Hormone Harmony” Recipe
How to Make the Hibiscus Hormone Concentrate
This recipe creates a potent concentrate that lasts for a full week. The deep ruby color and the aromatic scent of the spices make the brewing process feel like a true self-care ritual.

Method
- Boil: Add the filtered water to a large pot and bring to a rolling boil.
- Infuse: Add the dried hibiscus flowers, cinnamon sticks, bay leaves, and whole cloves to the water.
- Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 15–20 minutes. You’ll see the water transform into a deep, rich ruby red.
- Steep & Rest: Turn off the heat. Let the pot sit on the stove to steep for another 10–15 minutes. This "resting time" allows the spices to fully release their medicinal properties and mellow out the flavor.
- Strain: Using a fine-mesh strainer, carefully pour the tea into a large glass pitcher or mason jars, discarding the solids.
- Cool & Store: Let the elixir cool to room temperature before sealing. Store in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.
Notes
- To Drink Warm: Pour 1 cup of the concentrate into a mug and heat gently on the stove. Add a drizzle of raw honey for a comforting, grounding ritual.
- To Drink Cold: Fill a glass with ice, add 1 cup of the concentrate, and top with a splash of sparkling water or fresh berries for a refreshing, hormone-healthy mocktail.
- Adjusting the Strength: This recipe creates a high-potency concentrate. Hibiscus is naturally tart (similar to cranberry juice). If the flavor feels too bold for you, simply dilute your daily cup with 1/2 cup of water or sparkling water until it tastes just right!
- The "Clean Pot" & Safety Tip: Hibiscus is beautifully pigmented and can stain, so it’s best to use a stainless steel or glass pot. Avoid pouring the hot liquid into plastic containers, as plastic can leach chemicals that cause hormonal disruptions, something we are actively working to avoid!
- Sweeten to Taste: Because this is a medicinal tonic, I recommend drinking it unsweetened. However, if you prefer a little sweetness, add 1 tsp of raw honey while the tea is still slightly warm so it dissolves perfectly.
- Best Time to Drink: I love having my cup in the morning to stabilise my blood sugar for the day, or in the afternoon as a "ritual" to replace sugary snacks.
- Consistency is Key: Like any natural remedy, you’ll see the best results for your hormonal health if you enjoy your one cup consistently every day.
